First time I tried a dual boot system. At the moment it is running off a SD card. Build runs pretty well and is stable. I am overclocking at the moment to 528 MHz and everything seems to be going fine.

Call quality is great (sometimes better than the expo).

Speed wise it is impressive for an old phone. Occassionally Ill forget that I am dealing with an old phone I am so used to the speed of the Expo now.

BT works for headset but A2DP isnt working.

After playing with it for a couple of days, I have to say that I prefer windows mobile. Mind you this is coming from somebody who didn't like TouchFlo.

After looking at the apps market I was pretty unimpressed. Outlook integration works with email but havent got it to sync with the calender yet.

Anyway its an interesting experiment, but I am still in love with the expo. Has anybody else tried to load up android on their old phones yet?

The only other smartphone I have is my Incite. No android for it yet, they are still working hard on it though. Also, as soon as I got my eXpo, my Incite was seized by the crazy woman who lives in my house. The worst part is that she expects me to teach her how to use it.

@Keithyv: Haven't tried it, but wasn't aware until you posted here that I could get that on my Tilt (Kaiser), or that it could be a dual boot and run off the memory card either! I'm really kind of intrigued now.... please keep us posted on how that's working out for you.

@V.G.: "We learn best when we teach others..." or something lame like that, lol. I feel for you bro! I had to teach my fiance Vista when she got her new laptop - the last computer she had was Win 98 SE. THAT was a fun weekend.

I already had to teach her Vista. She's got a laptop that I only see when she can't make Vista work. I have a Pentium II 300 still rockin' 98 SE. I could go turn it on right now. Not much point to that though.

@RC and VG

based on progress so far i think i am going to change to the 1.6 version.

the 2.1 version is still in beta and is no where near stable enough for me at the moment.

in regards to women, i bought my wife a gps one day because she always called me when she was lost. i put it in the car and she refused to use it because she was convinced it wasnt smart enough to pick the best route. she was forced to use it one day when i wasnt available to help over the phone... and ever since its been her best friend.

This has quickly turned into a thread about women. Sorry 'bout that. But, about a week after I got Garmin on my Incite, she borrowed it to find something in Sac and got lost because she would turn too early. Garmin is still on there but I know she hasn't tried to use it since she's had the phone.

Back on topic, I might pick up a Tilt or maybe Fuze to play around with android. So I am interested in how version 1.6 treats you.

@ VG yeah I agree we are on shaky ground here...

Anyway back to the point... I switched to 1.6 and the speed is awesome. about 45Mb free in RAM and speed is probably equal to or snappier than the shifu WM rom I have installed on the Kaiser.

Still prefer my WM. Think I will send the Kaiser to my brother in Oz to play with.

Stay classy San Diego

Out of curiosity, what app are you using to overclock your Kaiser?

@RC

There is an application in Android developed called Rogue Tools which allows overclocking and dymaic setting of DPI density....

Had the 1.6 running sweet at about 500 MHz

The only issue I have had so far is an issue with the wifi power settings. In WM I can change the power settings on the kaiser. I always found that the wifi works best with the best performance setting. Otherwise it stalled my cheap wifi router and I had to reset the router.

I just installed an update designed for 2.1 which is supposed to amp up the power of wifi under Android. I hope this works.

How's that going so far? Also, would an 8 GB memory card be sufficient for this?

@ RC

sorry for the delay was in quebec for work. its funny you cross the border from ontario and instantly everything switches from english to french.

a quick update since i installed 1.6 things have been running fast and smooth. apps install well from the android market, which i have to say is a hell of a better experience than windows mobile.

as for the storage card... the overal operating system is about the same size as a windows mobile rom. i installed on an 8gb card but i am pretty sure you could get away with a 1 or 2 gb card. the operating system is initialised from an exe bootloader on the card. load up time on the first time takes about 5 minutes after that about 1 minute.

i like the dual boot experience, but wouldnt swap a windows mobile platform for android for a couple of reasons:

- i need the exchange intergration in windows mobile
- android is still young and suffering from fragmentation issues
- i dont particularly like the idea of the cloud storage... its one thing using my companies servers to store data, but do i really trust google?

anyway let me know if you have any more questions.... however, i am planning on sending the kaiser to my bro to play with very soon.

Keithyv - so I got Mym's Warm Donut to load from my SD card but ran into 2 issues I hoped you maybe  could help with:
1: Can't seem to connect to the AT&T network - period.
2: If I let it go to ''sleep'' sometimes, I get a linux error screen and have to soft reset.

Did you run into any of this?
Thanks,
RC

Ok,

No probs...

1) With android not only do you need the APN settings for 3g connections you need some additional settings as well called the MMC and MNC.

If you google android AT&T there should be a post with the MMC and MNC numbers.

I had 3g working with rogers in Canada so I know that it can be done.

2) Hmmm the only time I had that issue was when I had changed the pixel density on the screen and the phone continued to freeze on me. I then reinstalled the haret and didnt have a problem afterwards.

Try reinstalling the kernel on your sd card or try warm eclair. For the most part I found warm donut to be very stable and suitable for daily use. It was fast too and really gentle on memory. I think with android running on my Kaiser I had about 50 Mb Ram free (sweet). Android market worked perfectly and so did google sync.

Let me know if you continue to have problems and we can try and problem solve together.

There seems to be quite a bit of interest in Android here, myself included. Dark, would it be possible to open up a dedicated sub-forum for Android development / discussion?

We will discuss it.

WR

Edit: it's probably possible, however there is more then one person looking after forums, and will need to be talked about by us.
