I've been lurking since I saw the post for this Forum on the Howard Boards...

I'm 99% sure I want to get an Expo.  I've been using an HTC 8125/Wizard for the last 2.5 years, and it's fine, but for work I've started using it for tethering, so a 3G phone would be better.

I know most of you American's won't fully understand this, but up here in the Great White North the cell phone companies have held us hostage for years, by the short and curlies.  Things are just about to change, and I'm not doin' a contact, which means I'm buying an Expo if I want one.

I haven't looked terribly hard, but it looks like I'm facing about $500US for one sourced from south of the border.  OR it's the same price (in Cdn funds) for the Telus version.  And seeing as I HATE Telus, I'd be more than happy to walk into one of their stores and walk out with nothing more than a phone (OK, so I gave them my cash for the phone, that I can live with)

I noticed over on the "Battery Life" thread that there was some speculation about whether or not the IQ can operate on EDGE.  Can it? Can I get an IQ, get it unlocked, and beable to use it on Fido in EDGE or 3G?

The Expo owners can switch off their 3G, one on these fourms has done it, an has seen a small increase in battery life after doing so.

You should have no problems after unlocking the IQ to use on Fido.

Hmmmm.  I was thinking more along the lines of verifying that the IQ is EDGE capable, we know the Expo is, but I just wanted to make sure the IQ actually is.  With my luck, Telus had a proprietary version made with no EDGE circuitry to save a few bucks.

lol

I hear ya there.

Imo, it should, LG Canada list it as having 850,900,1800,1900 an 2100.
Telus HSPA is 850 an 1900, Umts 2100.

Bands 900 and 1800 are Edge bands.

Please someone jump if i am wrong, though that is what i make of it, that is capable.

Peace

Oh great, now I'm really confused.

I was thinking along the same lines as you, but went over to the GSM arena to check something there, and it is completely different...

Wow, Ok, so i am living under a rock i guess.

Thats not the way i understood it here in CA, though im no expert by any means, just a user.

Though, if you go by Arena says, your covered.

I knew 2100 was used in europe, but i thought we shared that with them, i must be incorrect an totally wrong.

Sorry for my misinformation, i am learned again.

Ok, heres the  specs on the phone.

http://www.gsmarena.com/lg_gw820_expo-3040.php
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100

http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/LG-eXpo-phone-p_4268.html
GSM Quad-band phone capable of global roaming (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
UMTS tri-band global 3G (2100/1900/850 MHz)

So from this, i see no problem.
I knew it had Umts 2100.

Hope that helps, now lol.
Edit to add: It has GSM850/1900 2G, but also the newer 850/1900 umts with 2100 umts.
So 3G where available an 2G where its not.

What is the difference between UMTS and HSDPA?  Because the GSMarena lists them as separate.

From further reading an poking, Rogers/Fido has been Umts all along an now its Bellus too.
Just Bellus is not, GSM, which we knew, just that, now with Bellus in the Sim card game its gets confusing as they jumped in late in the GSM game an early in the Umts/Hsdpa game.
(When it went from Cdma/Tdma to W-cdma an on, i got lost lol)

Umts an Hspa/Hsdpa are one an the same, from my understanding, Rev difference, speed difference an upload/download terminology.

The phone should work on Fido, but the problem is, can you get it Unlocked? I've had my IQ for a month now and trying to get it unlocked so I can use it with Bell, but I've tried around 10 remote unlocking services and no one seems to be able to unlock it. Tried a couple of local places as well and they pretty much just turned me down without trying.

Telus unlock a phone, are you kidding me...the future is "not" friendly at Telus. I asked their tech support for unlock code..they refused...even told them I was going out of country...they refused.

I am lucky, IQ is a 2nd phone for me, I have unlocked Tilt2..just wish I could knock both phone together to get the IQ processor with sense UI and Tilt2 screen..would be the perfect device...back to reality!!!

For some reason Telus and Bell have advised their Windows Mobile device suppliers not to make their IEMI databases available to the unlocker community.

I do understand their concerns, they have exclusive rights to a device and do not want lets say an Omnia II showing up on Rogers or Telus or an IQ on Bell network.

In the case of subsidized phone, I do have some understanding, however, in the case of outright purchase, its like Ford demanding your drive on only their approved roads (if they had approved roads).

Bell will give you an unlock code for Omnia II after 30 days for $ 75.

I think Telus Mobility management have had a group lobotomy or taken stupid pills. With this new network, from a customer service standpoint, they do not seem to understand customer friendly policies.

Telus needs to understand you cannot suck and blow at same time.....they want customers to bring their unlocked devices to their network...by the way when you bring your smartphone...better be prepared to search for all your settings, Telus will not provide them to you. However, if you want to use your Telus phone on another network...too bad...no unlock codes for you!!!!

Someone needs to send the "Phone Nazi's" a message...." No ARPU for You"

Does anyone know of ATT plan that you can use in Canada that is unlimited for around a $ 100/month, have heard Verizon may have one....Telus and Bell would not be happy if the US carriers made their unlimited plans available in Canada for calls and data consumed in Canada............that's the ticket...HELP!!!!

Just to add my two cents...

The major Canadian telecom wireless providers do not unlock phones. This includes Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido.

It doesn't matter if:

Your contract is up

You paid for the phone outright

You are going overseas

You would really appreciate it

You want to move to another carrier.

There is no legal obligation or financial incentive for them to do so.

In other countries you have the right to get you phone unlocked if you have been with a carrier for a certain time or if you paid for your phone outright.

Not in Canada.

If you heard somebody say they got a Canadian provider to remove the sim lock then it is more than likley untrue.

Eviltuna, I recommend that you always buy an unlocked phone from the states or europe if you want the freedom to change providers.

In addition, sim locks on newer phones are more complicated than on older phones. This is because part of the unlock code is held by the carrier. Unlockers will not generally have access to the carrier's database and as such, will not generally be able to unlock a canadian phone. There may be a hardware solution, but in general there will not be an easy text input to unlock.

In europe you can by a card which fits around a sim card to bypass a sim lock. These may be solutions to your problem.
