Just picked up a Canadian LG GW825 (Telus LG IQ)... I know its nearly identical to the American LG GW820 from AT&T..

Anyway.. my travel charger has a voltage rating of 4.8V and 1000mAh... all the e-bay sellers are claiming that the STA-U12WS which has a 5.1V 700mAh rating is compatible with my device. They are also selling the car charger for the Motorola V9, as compatible for my phone.

The OEM charger that came with my phone is STA-U13WR.. but I can't find it anywhere on e-bay yet. Can I just run the LG 5.1v A/C charger.. even if its meant for the LG Dare? What about the car charger meant for the Razr2 V9?

Anyone know, I want to grab a backup charger asap. Some seem to say that the voltage is ok to vary within 1v... also.. the average USB port gives 5V worth of power.. meaning that all USB phones can use 5V to charge. That sound reasonable?

USB is a 5volt standard, yes.

Just some vary output of their amperage a bit, though non shall pass 1ah by standard if i remember correctly, which is too much juice to slam back into a Li-Ion or Poly in these phones because theres no way to shed the heat without tripping thermal saftey cut off.

My USB on my pc output is 500mah, and the usb adapter i bought for any usb charging in my truck outputs 500-700mah, a little faster charge then the pc, an the wal wart should be a solid 1ah.

Them are the usuall standards, now as far as data cables go, i have seen a couple that will charge but not carry data, but i haven't seen one, not be able to charge yet.

Btw all Li-Ions an Poly's operate under 5 volts, per cell, only one in a phone, but in my rc stuff, can be multiples, Li-Ion=Highest voltage per cell to date, normal cell, of alkaline, lead acid, or carbon is maxxed at 2.2volts per cell(Rechargeable). Alkalines can carry higher voltage initally.
Safe voltage ranges are from low cut off at around 2.65 volts, and high side cut off if 4.75, thou i have seen guys push a solid 5. in for higher initall loads in rc's.

Peace

WR

I hope that helps..

Last thought, theres no battery memory or capacity issues with Li-Ions or Poly's, or vert very little.

The problem is, Phones an other equipment, need to run a few full charge to death cycles to establish a complete battery algorythym for displaying capacity, from its understanding of voltages.

Its a deep case but, full charge to death at least once a month to keep battery meter in check.
(Don't ever keep restarting a unit once it shuts off to a low power situation, it is possible to exceed low side cut off, an the battery will need to be jumped, or trashed depending on case by case scenario.)

Lol

What worries.(Thermal issues are all but behind us, unless they start using Cobalt or manganese, in them again, i cant remember which, but its the bad voodoo, and i think they got that process fixed now)

I think..
Peace

WR,

Sorry to summarize... would it be ok to use the 5.1v charger from the LG Dare with our phone?

Glad to hear about the battery memory, so that means I don't have to drain it each time.. I can charge it daily without concequence?

The charger i can't say if its pinned out identical, but if it is, the power will be fine.

Exactly, theres very little memory, there is techincally, but too minute to cause issues.

Do not worry about leaving it plugged in, it will not overcharge or hurt/degrade the battery.

ymmv.... but I have used three usb car chargers, and a charger for another phone and for a bluetooth headset.

They have all charged the device without issues to date.

I would be willing to give a try almost any micro usb charger from a reputable company.  I believe the European union is leading the charge on standardizing toward a micro usb, so that we don't end up with SOOO many different ones cluttering up the landscape.

HOW EVER....as I said, ymmv....do this very much at your own risk.

I have assumed that the phone would have interior circuitry to limit the charging amperage.  Certainly true with the Touch pro, and I would think is true with our phones.

I think the biggest risk is if the phone tries to draw way more than the charger can handle, and it isn't properly limited it will burn out the charger.

True, the circuitry that controls the charge cycle, rate, draw, thermal, low an hi cut off's all controlled by miniture switches built into each Li-Ion.

Charge input rates, are limited by these values established by the li-Ion manufacturers.

Onl thing you can do now a days to hurt the battery or others is, get it wet(Lithium+Water) big show, but most are hermetically sealled and other way is to drive a sharp object through the battery itself.
(Lg even recommends, to keep sharp objects such as animal teeth from puncturring their battery.)

I used to let the boys at the shop play with my old Li-Ions, most used a 4 foot stick with a nail in the end of it an push it through the battery for smoke an fireworks.

Or just expose it to the atmosphere, lithium will react with the water in the air itself an catch fire.
(an to think, you can carry on 5 indivdual batteries or a couple laptops on a plane, each battery has the potential to burn through the plane itself, only way to put out a lithium fire is to smother it with earth.)

The standard rule of thumb in my charging setup is, smoke or flam, through it through the window, don't even bother opening it, at home this is lol. Li-ions in my R/C hobby don't have safeties...

Wow, o/t huh///
Yeah i like batteries..

Sorry
