I recently heard about this service and I'm not sure what to think. Has anyone used it?

How is it on the eXpo? How does this affect your service plan? How was the quality in terms of reception of 2nd person's voice, their ability to hear you, speed, etc etc.?

I just heard about it so I really don't know much. I hope others will add some additional info.

I am a Google Voice user. I use it mostly to make free long distance calls from my land line and it works great. Voice quality is excellent on both mobile and LL
There isn't any official version that works on Windows Mobile devices yet, but there are  2 apps that I know of but haven't tried.

One Dialer (15 day trail $7.00 to buy)
http://www.onedialer.com/

iDialer v0.53 (freeware)
http://www.supware.net/iDialer/

There are also discussion threads on XDA for both

One Dialer - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=512865

iDialer - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=429984

In order to use these on your mobile or land line, you must get an invite from Google
Use this link - http://www.google.com/googlevoice/about.html
Once google sends you an invite, you are asked register your home and mobile numbers, and select your own personal google voice phone number. once your account is set up you can dial a number from your PC, your home phone or mobile will ring, depending on which device you select, when you pick it up the the call will be placed to the number you dialed on your PC.
Without any of the above apps installed on your phone, you can receive incoming and  dial out calls to your mobile without getting charged long distance, but you will use your minutes. I believe the 2 apps use WiFi to dial out so the GSM is not used.
Hope this answers your question

You can also use your browser to use google voice. I don't know the link on top of my head, but goto m.google.com and click "voice". You can enter the number you want to call and then google voice will call back to your phone to connect the call.

I think google did the webapp to get google voice to work on iphone because apple rejected their native app.

I use GV on my eXpo to make international LD calls for free. You simply register your mobile number on your dashboard, call your GV number and select make a call.. works awesome..
GV works like a digital assistant. You can route specific calls to specific phone numbers. If your family calls, you can choose to ring all lines, etc. It has voice announce options so you can hear who is calling and decide if you want to talk or send to VM etc..

I've been using google voice for some time now. I actually use it for my primary voicemail. I really only use it for that and for call screening. You can change your voicemail number on your phone to be that of your google voice number and then when you either reject a call or let it go to voicemail it will call your GV number. When you get a voicemail you can have it text and/or email you to let you know. It does a decent job of transcribing the voicemail, but it could use some work.

The part about screening calls is pretty nice too. Just give someone your GV number instead of your cell# and when they call you can have it set to where if they aren't in your contact list it will make them say their name before it calls you. You can also use your GV number to get unlimited free phone calls if you have AT&T or another provider that offers a service similar to AT&T's "A-List". You make a list of any 10 numbers you want and you get calls to/from those numbers for free. Well if you enter your GV number and have people call that number, it will show up to AT&T as your GV number and not the person who is calling you. So no matter who is calling you, it will be free. Plus since you get charged for calling your default voicemail, if you use GV as your voicemail, it would be free too.

Would anyone be so kind as to send me an invite?  I requested one earlier this week, but haven't heard anything yet.  Normally I'm pretty patient, but I'm really excited to give this a try.  I was paying $30/month for unlimited long distance, but cancelled it to save some money.

Anyway, PM me if you need my e-mail.

Thank you very much.   Grin

I've still had no luck getting an invite.  I posted on Facebook to see if anyone I know could hook me up.  No luck.  I've made requests with different addresses and still no luck.  Who would have thought it would be so difficult.  Sad

All the people I know who use it had to wait at least 3 weeks from their request until they received their invite. Some of them had to waid close to 2 months. Seems kinda elitist to me.
