I just got my expo a few days ago and I'm wondering why when i wake my phone, email is always showing.  It's like when activesync checks email it bring it to the front.  It's annoying that i have to "X" out of it before I get to my home screen.  Can I stop this from happening?

I'm using SPB 3.5.4 if that matters.

Thanks!

Hi Gater, Welcome to the forums Wink

Do you have a hotmail account possibly polling for email, or using the windows live app for gathering email?

It's usually the Live app, in my experience.

If so, uninstall the Live app, reset up your email accounts using the built in email and add the hotmail accounts there. Then re-install the Live app, but do not let it poll the account(s) for email, set it to "No" email synchronization.

I have two Gmail account and an exchange server account set up through the built in outlook program.  Before the expo i had a Q9h (which isn't touch screen) and they were set through the same program without this happening.  It's not a big deal, it's just annoying to always have to close it when i wake the phone up.

Yeah its annoying alright.

I have 5 email accounts on my phone, and had that issue in the past and it really pissed me off at the time.

It would open the mail app when doing other things, it didn't take over, though you could see it flicker as it loaded it again.

It could just be that the Live app is trying to do a "Real time" sync like the Exchange server can, or can be set too, and it causes the overall mail app griefage.

Presently, only my exchange account is "As items arrive", the rest are set to polling at 15 minute or 30 minute intervals.

Play with the account polling and timing some.

Hope you get it.

Peace

That's odd - "Windows Live" is listed in my Remove Programs. Did you get it from the Marketplace app or somewhere else? One possible alternative would be to open the Marketplace app itself, select My Applications, select Remove an App and try to take it out that way.

I don't believe I got it from the marketplace. Could be wrong (I think the Office upgrade is clouding my memory). It isn't in the list of apps to be removed in Marketplace, either.

Wait a minute, are you getting to your Live/Hotmail inbox by opening the Messaging option? If you are looking at your inbox (no emails open yet) and swipe your finger across the screen to the right or left, does it switch to text messages or Outlook inbox?

What I know I DID do, was add Hotmail via the Live app.

In an effort to prevent the unwanted behavior, I disabled all Live features, hoping that would be enough. (That was before I even noticed it wasn't uninstallable).

So now, I don't have the Hotmail account accessible in the inboxes.

Confused about your question - should I re-enable Hotmail before doing that? Is the order of the accounts significant somehow?

Right now, the swipe order is:
gmail1 > IMAPacct > funambol > gmail2 > gmail3 > outlook > messages

This is sounding like what I just went through after upgrading the ROM - the Live app was gone from the Remove Software list, but the restore I did put some of its files back in. What I ended up doing was downloading and installing the Live app from the Marketplace again and received the message "the previous version of Windows Live will be removed before this...." and said OK to that. Then it reinstalled Live, and after a reboot, I could uninstall it properly.

Thanks, that solved the problem of removing Live!

(have a cookie)

Now I'm testing. I made sure all tasks were ended, and launched the YouTube app.
Sure enough, my gmail inbox popped up within 5 minutes.
So I went in and set all email accounts to manual. Made sure I quite messaging.
Switched back to YouTube, and halfway through a video, my gmail popped up again.

However, I was just able to watch video uninterrupted for 20 minutes now. I reset just one gmail account to check every five minutes, and even after sending myself a test email from my laptop, YouTube has played on, uninterrupted. But 22 minutes later, gmail popped up.

Perhaps the task switching was preempted due to a text message that came in during that time - it popped up at the bottom, pausing the video. That's not as intrusive, though still undesirable when you don't want ANY interruption. Some further tweaking will be necessary to disable that, I imagine.

The more I test, the more it seems that messaging only pops up once. So, if I end messaging and start YouTube, it comes up pretty soon (as my gmail is set to 5 minute intervals).

But after switching back to YouTube, it doesn't pop up again. So as long as I leave messaging running (which makes perfect sense to do, since it's checking every five minutes anyway), I get no interruptions.

I am so sorry, this thread fell from my radar and I lost it.

Very glad RC was here to help in removing Live, that was the cause of my
grief and mine opening all the time.

Ok, one other thing then if it's still opening up on it's own, is there more then one email account polling "As items arrive"?

Did you play with the polling times?

If so, set only one to poll like that, and the rest to staggered times, like check for email every 10 or 15 minutes on the extra email accounts and test it out.

Again, sorry this thread fell from my radar ASK, some help I am  Roll Eyes

 Roll Eyes

you know, I don't see any "as items arrive" option in any of my accounts. Sounds like something only an exchange server account would have.

But what you suggest rings true. I actually already set it up so that my main gmail account checks every five minutes, and the others are all between 20 minutes and an hour. Staggered, as you say.

As long as messaging is a running task, there are no interruptions. It would seem that there is a hidden service running scheduled tasks, including launching messaging at the smallest polling interval.
