Well I use Gmail as my exchange server, so it is set to "As items arrive", the rest are staggered timings of 15 an 30 minutes.

Your totally correct, though it should never pop-up an come to front on its own, if it does, one of these glitches is still effecting it.

Another way, is remove all your email accounts, add them back one at a time, allowing at least 15-25 minutes after setting one up and letting it poll and make sure the "Messaging" app don't open, and then add another email account back till either you find the culprit or it is cured.

Maybe as well, set up your Gmail/Exchange first, then the other accounts, as it should be the first Imap account imo.

It's a bug, and a slightly irritating one at that, I personally can not live with it and discovered it's usually one of these things as the cause.

I'll look into changing my gmail account settings as an exchange server, as I would like to have the option of "as they arrive".

WR, are you sure that messaging doesn't pop up for you, under the condition that the messaging app is not running? Use the task manager to close everything, then launch an app and wait. Does messaging pop up then?

followup

This exchange thing isn't working out for me, and I wonder if it's worth the bother.

I had to misspell gmail.com in the first step, otherwise it would try to automatically configure the account as it did the first time I added it. I figured I'd just go back later and fix it, which I was able to do.

I set up my first gmail account as an exchange server successfully (googling for instructions, I learned I had to use m.google.com as the server), and chose to also synchronize Tasks, Notes, Calendar, and Contacts as well, just to see what would happen.

Annoyance 1: The first thing I noticed was that this new account was called Outlook E-mail, with no way of changing it. I have another gmail account, and possibly a third, that I'd like to set up as well. But apparently, I can add no more than one. So, no "as they arrive" polling for gmails #2 and #3. It would be swell if there was a registry hack to not only rename the account, but also to use a gmail icon instead of Outlook.

Annoyance 2: activesync, which has now started showing up in task manager, seems to be having errors synching, but I don't know the details. I just get support code 0x80004005 as an explanation. I was able to send an email from the new account successfully. But I don't see anything happening with contacts and tasks. I removed Tasks, Contacts, and Calendar, and the error went away. Ten minutes after sending and immediately receiving a test email in gmail, it showed up on my home screen. I'd be better off with every 5 minutes compared to "as they arrive" (which I confirmed it was set to).

Adding things back one at a time, it turns out Tasks was the culprit causing the error. Guess I can't sync tasks. Don't use them much anyway.

Annoyance 3: "Sent from my LG eXpo™, a Windows® phone from AT&T." was added to the bottom of a test email I composed on the phone. How to disable? Can't.

However, I am pleased to report that even after ending all tasks, then launching YouTube, messaging has not popped up at all for half an hour. At one point, a friend's tweet interrupted with the usual bubble at the bottom. For uninterrupted sessions and presentations, I'll have to remember to disable this. That's much less annoying than having to set 5 email accounts to manual check, though.

BTW, when I checked task manager, activesync was running again.

Good grief the troubles we go through to be modern Grin

1.Active sync, will always be there in the task manager, it restarts itself and is normal. It is handling the exchange server coordination.

2.You can name most of the email accounts, just not the Exchange account.

3.In Email options, You can change your email and text message signatures there with in.

4.I am ABSOLUTELY SURE, I know when the messaging application is working right an when it's not, Been using WM since before they added a Phone to it.(It either works, and in the back ground, or it don't and it pops up all the time.

5.It's all a Pain in the buns alright, but once you get past this, it's worth it to not see the pop up anymore.

6.Sorry if this is not in chronological order, I am having issues with my neighbors, and need to rush outside early this morning to make some noise legally. Let's see, lawnmower, weed eater, then my R/C Nitro truck with modified exhaust and 35,000 rpm red line.(That is better then any chainsaw for bark)

The fact that messages don't actually come in "as they arrive", and often take longer than five minutes... that and the fact that I can't change the name from Outlook e-mail... that's the dealbreaker for me. I'll be switching it back to the way it was before. Even if the popping up behavior was not correct behavior, the fix that I found (to never stop messaging in task manager) is sufficient. Even if I do end all tasks, and messaging will be bound to pop up soon after, 90% of the time it's not inconvenient at all. And a lot of the time, the phone will be just lying around - I don't mind if messaging is on top when I pick it up! I just wanted to avoid the popup behavior during certain uses, and now I know how to do that.

THANK YOU though for getting me to try an exchange setup, though! I'll keep using that for the Calendar synching with my google account - WHY AM I JUST FINDING OUT ABOUT THIS NOW? (it's not like I didn't know I could; and I've been synching my Calendar to my iTouch for some time. just never considered it for my WM phone; had an HTC8125 for the last 5 years and never even thought of it - on it was my main calendar, but never synched with anything. not even with desktop)

Exchange email is the fastest of the 5 accounts on mine, near instant.

Glad you found a way to use/live with it.
