Good news, I was at least partially successful.

Attached is a rudimentary app that'll turn the led on and off. It needs icons, a better interface, etc, but it does the trick for the moment. If anyone has an artistic side .... Wink

It doesn't keep the light on when the device sleeps, which'll be my next effort ... although I'm not sure how well that's going to work out. The lg-camera app doesn't keep the light on either; and it seems device sleep = unconfig the camera ... so don't hold your breath.

I've only tested this on my IQ, but it's all DLL calls (no deviceIO) so it should be safe. however:
I'm not a pro hacker, and this is not a professional product. You use this program at your own risk

Hopefully a expo user can confirm it works for them.  It won't be likely to work on a non monaco phone as I'm using "additional/oem" calls in the cameraplatform.dll and not something generic that'll be cross platform.

Awesome, thanks for the app, it's perfect for doing what it's suppose to do.  I've been looking for a "flashlight" app for as long as I've had my expo.

Thanks mrpants!

y'all are going to make me blush  Embarrassed

Glad to hear it works on the expo. I figured it would, the dlls are almost identical. It should also work on the 825v, but since it requires the monaco specific cameraplatform.dll that'll be it.

quick questions:
1) Anyone wanna make me an icon and a couple of graphics? Wink

2) A single On/Off button (probably my preference), a pair of buttons, or something else?

3) Name suggestions?

I've always been a bit wary of torch apps (horror stories of melting components and the like), but I would suggest that it's critical for the light to trigger on app launch, and not rely on a GUI button. The reason for this is that many people will want to keymap this app to one of the few mappable buttons on the IQ/eXpo, and for that to be feasible, it would need to toggle on launch and closing.

Does that make sense or am I off base here?

First off, well done MrPants! Wish had of paid more attention to my programming courses during uni it would be great to create custom apps.

And, I think King made a good point, would it be possible to program in a timer on the flashlight app? Something the user can vary like a 3 to 5 sec timeout and then an additional optional timer cooldown. Prevents the need for the user to switch the app off and prevents spamming of the app to protect internal components.

These are just suggestions for thought more than anything else. Again, great work MrPants!

That definitely makes sense.

Regarding a fear of torches Wink  I hear ya. One of the reasons I took so long was that I wasn't ready to replace my phone if it died. Yesterday I decided if I broke it I'd just go buy a new one so I started brute forcing stuff I was afraid to touch before. Smiley

I had the light on for considerable time while working on it and it didn't get anywhere close to as warm as the device did when I had it connected to the dev laptop (charging + screen on + debugging)

It's also not the "bright mode" (I haven't figured out how to enable it) so it should be safe for longer periods - I've used the always on option in lg's camera for in excess of ten minutes at points with no noticeable side effects. But, as I said before, I'm not a pro hacker, so do use caution and common sense please.

Ironically I hated programming in university. I actually still don't really like it ... at least not when it's required. However, without a deadline, I'm golden. Wink

And, I think King made a good point, would it be possible to program in a timer on the flashlight app? Something the user can vary like a 3 to 5 sec timeout and then an additional optional timer cooldown. Prevents the need for the user to switch the app off and prevents spamming of the app to protect internal components.

I'd planned providing some sort of configurable time out to be safe.

The on/cool down cycle is an interesting idea but I'm not sure how practical that'll make it for use. As I mentioned in my other post, heat doesn't really seem to be an issue with it, but obviously I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Now that the "hard part" is done I'll setup a project page, ticket tracker etc and let you all guide my direction Wink
