Or at least preview the ones I have.  So far all I can do is pick a new one and wait for a text message to hear how it sounds.

There has to be a way to change the sounds.  Why would they let us use our own music as ringtones, but not change that?  I really miss my Star Trek hailing frequency.

Hi thatgengirl, Welcome to the forums.

If your using LG's Idles to change the sound, its quite limited.

Best way is through, Start Menu/Settings/Sounds an notifications.
Though now you only have a few choices to choose a sound file for, some were hidden by LG an moved to its interface controls, well that just will not do. SO if you use the tweak given here, it puts all the missing sound notification control back in the normal windows "Sounds and Notifications" option.

Follow Modry's Link, get the tweak and away you go.

Look around the forums, lots to take in.

Peace

WR

Hey there thatgengirl and welcome! Once you have installed the Sounds & Noticfications tweak, you can save the desired sound files/music clips to the root directory (no subfolders) of your storage card  - they will all be available in the Sound & Notifications selection menu, but not take up any precious phone memory.

Also, to get around the annoying 300k ringtone size limit (if you haven't already) see the following thread:

Easy, You download the cab from Modry's post above, Copy in onto the phone, I keep a folder on my storage card for things I want to re-install if I hard reset on the road and don't access to my PC.
Then Surf to it on the phone using file explore or my favorite an free one Total Commander, and click on the cab file, it will self install, then for best practice, reset your Phone.

Now go to Start,Settings/Sounds & Notifications, and the missing options that LG took out, like for setting tones for SMS an MMS are there for your tweaking.

I hope this makes it clearer or easier for you now friend. Wink

Ok, to add new tones an tunes for Ringers,SMS, Alarms...
Like Rogue suggested, You can put them loosely on the storage card, example not in a folder to save memory of the phone itself, some peeps have alot of ringtones lol.

Rogue has also provided you with a link for a Cab file, that allows for tones, tunes, ringers what have you, that are over 300kb in size, as WM will not normally use or allow them. You may need that depending on your file sizes.

Now an other option to place them sound files like myself as I don't more then 5mb total of Ringers,Tones an Alarms,..
 If its a Ringer,SMS,MMS copy them into \Application Data\Sounds,
if its for Alarms, Copy them into the \Windows folder itself.

The last two methods will take up system memory, so if you don't put a million tunes on its not so bad, And it assures if you should remove your storage card, no hanky panky with missing tunes.
I haven't used the the storage card method myself, It may just copy the individual tune or ringer over into windows anyways.

You need to use a File explorer or manager type of program Like Total Commande or the built in File explorer to do anything on WM.

WR

PS, I added to this post, Total Commander if you don't already have it, Its a free file explorer that can do alot, you will need one like this sooner or later.

I mean "Soft Rest" Not a phone wiping "Hard Reset".

To soft reset, theres a button under the battery door cover just beneath the camera when looking at it from the back.

Thats a soft reset and is ok to do, it resets programs, memory, its like restarting your PC.

A "Hard Reset" is formatting the memory, clearing all the stuff you add and install, only do this if the phone is totally borked or your selling it type of thing.(Hard resets can be done through a multi-button combination, very hard or if the phones will boot an let you into the Start menu, its under settings, becarefull, as the option to wipe storage card is there too.

Again, to recap, Install the Missing sounds an Notifications Cab file, Soft reset the phone, add your tunes or sound files that are under 300KB in size or you will need the second cab provided in this thread to allow their usage. Then, goto Start menu/Settings/Sounds & Notifications, and set up your sms,mms and ringer sounds there as its meant to be.

If I'm not making it clear enough and thats pretty darn common lol, just keep asking questions ok.

 Cheesy

Where to install, look at my earlier post, you have 2 options, on storage card itself(Not in any folder) Or,
In \Applications\Sounds folder on the phone for SMS,Ringers and MMS and for Alarm sounds, copy them into the \Windows folder itself.

Ok.  I have the files on my storage card, as well as in windows. I've used file explorer to locate the install file, and have run it several times.  After which I put two small wav files in the sounds folder.  I soft reset, I go to start, settings, sounds and notifications... and nothing.  There still isn't an option for new text message, nor is there my sound files unless I select them for incoming calls.

Why isn't this working?

The only events listed in my sounds and notifications are:

Phone: Incoming Call
ActiveSync: Begin Sync
ActiveSync: End Sync
Beam: Autoreceive
Connection disconnected
Connection established
IM: New instant message
IM: Nudge
Messaging: New email message
Reminders
Wireless network detected

And I can use my personal sound fiules for any of those... just no text message options.

Then, you didn't succesfully install the file from Modry's post, or As I attached in my last post.

It has to be installed,(The Cab file) to device memory.

Then phone has to be (Soft) reset.

Then your SMS options will be present.

Then add your tunes.

lol, I just seen what your doing.

You can't use the option to change sounds for sms under the menu in the messaging application itself, thats a LG feature thats for Idles Sms, if thats the one your using, I am not sure where them sound files are kept or how to add to them, but its a limited feature set so it would be best to use the controls where I mentioned them.

Start Menu/Settings/Sounds an Notifications.

That is, Windows Mobile master control for sounds an notifications.

WR

Edit: I have to wander for now, If you read my posts carefully, and do as I mention, It will work.
Good luck.
