The graphical emoticons included in the \\Windows\Emoticons directory are in a cache file and apparently can only be accessed from within the IM app. However...

There is sort of a way with the XT9 keypad, but only if you have it set to "half" (two letters per key, tap FN then DEL):

1) Swipe your finger smoothly and quickly across the keypad from one side of the screen to the other  (left-to-right or right-to-left makes no difference) - the keypad will switch to symbols.

2) In the lower left corner, tap the key that says "1/4" until it reads "4/4" - there are your basic emoticons.

3) Now, swipe your finger sideways across the keypad again - and you're  back to letters.

Now all you have to do when you need a smiley is swipe your finger  Grin

EDIT: I have seen a few 3rd party tweaks that have made emoticon libraries available from within the default WinMo SMS app but I've never tried any of them, so can't advise there.

Been looking for solution for a month on the smileys. Do you think it would be as easy as adding to the existing library to enable larger selection?

Most welcome Charly. Just adding your own emoticon png's to that folder could potentially add to the existing library for the IM app - worth a shot I'd say. Let us know how that goes if you try it.

The SMS application is pretty much text-only - you could create your own folder of emoticons in My Pictures, then while writing your message tap MENU > INSERT > PICTURE OR VIDEO then open that folder and choose your smiley - but this will change the text message to a MMS. Hardly worth it, IMO.

Another trick (especially if you do not see the smiley you want in XT9) is to tap MENU > My Text. This will display 10 preset words/sentences you can insert with one tap. They are pre-set by WinMo, but scroll to the bottom of the list and you'll see you can edit them - this gives you the chance to create 10 custom (text/ASCII based) smileys to drop into your messages with just 3 quick taps.  Cool

Do you have the XT9 keyboard set to "half" first?

Hey RC... just checked and I do have xt9 set to 1/2..just to be clear, 2/letters per key mode. Double checked all the sys setting I could find or know about, and did not see anything which might need to be enabled in order to view the lg stock emoticons. are you able to view them?

I have woodhole's tweak prog, net cf 3.5 and thats bout all.
(just looked there thinking I might have done something there but doesn't look like it.

I know the smileys are kinda corny but its fun once in awhile Cool

Ok, I see where the confusion is:

In our text messages, you can only add smileys that are built of ASCII (text-based) characters, i.e. : - ) or ; - P  for example (without the spaces, of course).

Only in the IM application can you access and use the stock LG graphical emoticons - smileys that are actually image files and can be incorporated into the message you send or receive. Now, just like on this webpage here, you may type in 8 ) and when you post or send the message, it is converted into this:  Cool  but in text messaging this does not happen. Notice, if you receive a text from someone and THEY put a smiley in it, you only see the letters/symbols that make it up, not a yellow cartoon image smiley?
