Hi everyone,

I'm bought the LG IQ phone online, without ever touching or seeing the real unit and I'm starting to think I may have made a mistake !   Aside from this great forum, there isn't much info on this phone.  I'm worried I bought a phone that LG deemed to be a mistake and not doing any upgrades.   Embarrassed  I've looked on LG and there aren't any real software updates.  All the good stuff appears to be from the knowledgeable people here.

My observations after "using" it for 2 days.  This is my 1st smart phone, an upgrade from the LG VU which was another LG mistake with no updates.  That thing was laggy and I hated the touch screen keyboard, hence I bought one with a hard keyboard.

1) The OS is stupid, both the LG and WINMO can't make up its mind on whether to use the fingers or a stylus.  Not consistant at all.

2) Some icons are too small to touch, hence earlier complaint.

3) The resistive touch screen is not very sensitive, even at its highest setting.   Is there a program that can make it better ?   Huh

4) Will a Zagg type screen protector further dull the screen setting ?

5) Has anybody installed the SPB mobile shell and notice GREAT improvements ?  The demo looks great.   Or are the numerous  programs here better overall ?

6) No manual except the quickstart.   I'm guessing it's on the LG disk along with all the junkware I have to install.

7) Battery drain fast, not as bad as I thought but still pretty fast and I thought my LG VU drained pretty fast..

Thanks

I am sorry you are having problems with your phone. I must agree with you completely as I felt the same as you until I came across all its possibilities. One thing I think would fix most all your issues it the custom roms over at the rom development section on this forum. Dragon storm is much smoother nicer and more finger friendly then the original stock settings and I would highly recommend it. As LG very seldom updates....well.....any of their phones!

Best of luck to you Smiley

I must agree with ericgrain and advise you to get latest dragonstorm ROM it is great. It makes the phone fly. Head over to the ROM dvelopment section and see what it does but in simple terms it takes out all the lg crapware and saves a lot more space on the phone.

Welcome to the forum, GMTN. Upgrading to a custom rom is one way you can make your experience with the IQ more enjoyable. Also, look into Woodhole's Tweaker app. It can make the touch screen a lot more usable and includes most of the tweaks that have been discovered by the community. There is a lot of info here on the forum to help you with getting the most out of your IQ. Have a look around and have some fun.

A late welcome from myself GMTN, But welcome to the forums Smiley

The guys pretty much nailed it, a custom rom with Woodholes tweaker app, an the phone is a new beast altogether.

Lots of other stuff you can add onto it too, like the SPB shell if you want even after adding a custom rom can still be used if you want, there is a demo of the app I believe too.

ANyhow, enjoy your Dragon equipped LG, as it was meant to be here.

Peace

GMTN,

nice to hear from another aussie...

in response to your post:

The IQ is not an iphone or an android based smartphone. It is a windows mobile phone. There are a variety of pluses and minuses associated with that.

One of the minuses is that microsoft was very hands off with the development of windows mobile and essentially left it up to consumers or enterprise to develop applications and UI elements that they needed for WM. So as a result you can expect that consistency between apps and even the UI may be lacking.

One of the very big pros is that you can do anything you want to your phone. You have complete access to the file storage system. You can sideload apps (and there are a massive amount of apps for WM). You have removable storage. You can tweak the hell out of it.

So it comes down to personal choice. If you don't like it sell it and buy an iphone. I really like Windows Mobile that's why I will be keeping my expo. At least until something better comes along that can beat windows mobile in pure business efficiency. There is no other OS in the world today that is so exceptional in dealing with synchronising with outlook exchange and microsoft office compatibility (maybe WP7).

Don't forget that your phone is a multimedia powerhorse too. With free apps such as TCPMP you can play virtually any movie format without conversion. The other bonus is that you can put music and movies on your phone by sideloading or on the phone directly without needing use itunes (sometimes I think this simple fact is overlooked).

As for games use FPSEce and play a multitude of old psx games (that you legally own of course). A lot of these games hold up against anything developed for the iphone. (Final Fantasy VII on my phone!! awesome! easily 200+ hours of gameplay)

Anyway, long winded reply.

Simple message... read the boards, tweak it, if you still don't like it get another phone.

I never knew about FPSEce, will have to look into that.  I also would never get an Iphone since it doesn't have a hard keyboard.

I'm just pissed that it's the 2nd LG phone that I've bought that doesn't seem to have any support from the manufacturer.   That's probably my fault for thinking that they care about their products, especially one with such excellent specifications.

I've downloaded Woodholes tweaker app and will try to install it once they mail me the USB cable since they left it out in the package.   Really looking forward to seeing the difference as so many members have given it rave reviews...

I just wanted to thank all the ppl who worked on the Tweaker project.  I've finally installed it on my phone and I hope things will be better than before.

This stupid phone as frozen on me 3 times ( before installing Tweaker ) for no reason as I was merely using the WI-FI internet explorer.

My last crap phone, the LG VU, as much as it was an unsupported phone from LG, at least never , ever froze on me.   I just expected a lot more from this phone.

Unfortunately, it looks like once again, I bought into a phone that people are bailing out on already and it's less than a year old with stellar hardware specs.  I see some of the Mods are moving onto Win7.  My next phone in a year will be have a robust and supported operating system, unlike this Winmobile crap and anything but LG phones.

Oh yeah, that and no "Angry Birds".  Android has it free ( with Ads ).   It's the little things that count too.

Sorry for the rant.  Grin

No worries about the rant, every os has its shortcomings  Wink

Now with that said, I myself just went back to using Opera Mobile as my main browser for the same reason, PIE/Pocket-Internet-Explorer is a mobile browser that is temperamental to say the least, it sometimes will not open pages, freezes, or just crashes.
SO Opera Mobile saves a lot of lost hair over it, try it.

If your still running the stock ROM, I am not surprised of your frustration being compounded, the original stock rom is a nightmare, LG did us no favors with it by any means. Though the ROMS on our forums alleviate a lot of the issues with it, if your willing to install it an reload everything you have back on the phone.

It comes with some of its own quirks too, but far far less then the one that comes with the phone, one of the bonuses being a highly improved touch sensitivity. Though if you actually like LG's Idles, flashing a new ROM is not for you, as it is the corner stone of the majority of the problems an has been weeded out to the best of Darks abilities, an rightfully so. POS skins are no more on the new WP7, MS has made sure to stop that crap being over-layed on it's OS.

Freezing while using Wifi an PIE is still common on newer ROMS, though using Opera mobile, its a damn pleasure over the latter and freezing is a thing of the past..Just don't let it go into sleep mode with Wifi on, or expect a slightly long delay while it re-establishes itself as it shuts down Wifi when in sleep mode.

I myself have been wanting to throw my LG IQ under a bus at times indeed, but I cool down an realize just how much I prefer it to anything else out there an smile again. It's LG that makes me angry, very very poor support.
I am not dumping WM anytime soon, I will buy a WP7 phone when it's available here an will more then likely buy the LG Optimus as from reviews it's one of the best made out of the batch of new WP7 phones, surprisingly.
As well as, LG will not have a hand in its future updates, they are being controlled by MS themselves an not left to the manufacturers anymore, thank Christ.

From the reviews I have read on it, WP7 is being touted as Rock-Solid in its approach and the LG phone itself as sturdy with good specifications, so once it's released an passes with no flaws in my tests, there's no need for LG from that point onward, just MS as it should be.

Though with that mentioned, I will be keeping my LG IQ for along time yet, its features are not present in anything else out there yet an it's like an old friend, quirks an all that make it what it is.

So, either grab Opera-mobile an go, or read up on Darks Dragonstorm ROM an flash it, an use the Tweaker app still, and your doing as best as can be expected, an as well as the rest of us that have already.
You will have to re-install everything as expected from flashing a new ROM, you can use Microsofts Myphone service to back up your contacts an documents online then restore it after flashing. DO not try to use a back up(Like SPB or Sprite Back up utility) from one ROM on another ROM, their not the same os makings an you will have issues. Copy cab files etc to your storage card before, for faster re-installs an safe keeping.

Hope this long post helps some... Smiley

Peace

I believe Woodhole is still working on it.

Things in real life, get in the way of our ambitions on the net at times  Cheesy

I think you will like opera a lot, I know I do.
