I am new to the world of smartphones. I have played with a few (incl iphone) in stores. But LG expo is the first phone I own so far.  I plan to try the Tweaker app to get my touch more friendly. I really really love this phone except for just one issue. The speaker near the ear has some noise when I talk on phone. It is not very bad but noticeable on med-high volume.  However, this disappears when I use ear phones, so I know it is not the call quality. AT&T replaced my first phone and the second one also seems to have the same issue. I am wondering if anyone else had this issue.

Other than this, this is a great phone. Does anyone use Skype on this phone?

1) I found some crackling issues to when I got mine. Not too bad, but noticeable. However, after flashing Dark's latest ROM I thought that the sound quality improved for me. Maybe a placebo not sure. My thoughts were maybe LG had improved the drivers.

2) As for skype it is an ongoing battle for me. Skype on windows mobile will not use the earpiece speaker. There are some workarounds for other phones (namely HTC) which will route the output from the speaker to the earpiece after the call is initiated.

Teksoft wrote a program called audioroute, which unfortunately doesnt work for the expo which will route the sound to the earpiece. However, I understand Teksoft are updating the audioroute program to include more recently released phones. I have chimed in at XDA to request support for the expo... so let's see.

I also havent been able to get the microphone of my bluetooth headset to work with skype either. Sound is routed to the earpiece of the bluetooth headset but if you want to talk you have to hold your phone up to your mouth and speak through the phone mic.

so some experience with skype on the expo in short:

- Other callers complain of echos if you use the speaker and have it too loud. Sometimes they complain when it is low as well. This is due to their voices being routed through the phones mic from the speakers creating echoes on their end. Solution: turn volume way down and use the phone reversed with the speaker at your ear, or use a headset.

- The "keep backlight on" option doesnt work with the expo. while talking you will notice the screen will grey and all sound will stop on skype. This is because the backlight is being switched off which in turns switches off skype. Remedy if you know you are going to use skype then change your backlight settings or periodically touch the screen to keep it alive.

- Sound quality on my end when using skype is reasonable... best over wifi, but it works with 3g as well.

- Dont use fring (well you cant anymore anyway) or any 3rd party app. These apps route the skype call through their own servers first, resulting in longer delays and possibly lowering the quality of the call.

- In my experience skype works best for short phone calls when I cant get phone reception. My wife complains a lot when I use when I am away, because she doesnt like the sound quality at her end. Because there a lot of input factors I am not sure what the exact cause is. Skype seems to have done a really half assed job on the windows mobile skype software.

- If teksoft can get audioroute to work with the expo, it may be more usable on a regular basis for me.

Keithyv, thanks a lot for all the great information. I noticed that my phone had a older version of rom. I flashed it with the latest version from lg website. I will play around with this and I might try darks rom little later. I noticed the sound problem improved but only a little bit. The noise is still noticeable.

Thanks for the info on skype. I tried it a couple of days back. You are so right on all the points. I have not tried bluetooth.

After flashing I noticed that with all the system processes, I only have ~70mb of program ram free. Will Dark's rom improve this figure and make the phone faster? Also I like lg idles can I keep this if I flash Darks rom?

I am wondering if winmo 6.5 can later be upgraded to win ph 7? Does anyone know.

Thanks

Hello ybkexpo, Welcome to the forums Wink

Edit:To fix my mixed posting ,again lol.

Having 50-80 mb of ram free, is golden, it don't get much better then that on here with WM. As well, we won't see a upgrade to wm7, its not in the cards.

Our OS wm 6.5, will more then likely outclass wp7 for sometime, or at least until it (Wp7) can do a fraction of what Wm 6.5 can do currently, and its quite alot.
