Hello. I just received my Expo today. I haven't done much with it other than load some contacts and music/video and a couple of other things (listed below).

I have a few questions about my venture into this phone; I'd appreciate any help regarding the following:

1. I can't connect to AIM/MSN/Yahoo. Any reason why?
2. Every now and again (seemingly when I am near a WiFi connection that isn't my home) I get a message saying something about the Expo not being able to connect, why is this?
3. I tried connecting to WiFi at my home and I connected. I was able to go to an ATT Page, but I closed it since I wasn't sure if they would charge for that or if I was just using WiFi from my home. Do they charge for usage even if I am in a ''hotspot''?

If any of you know where I can go to get answers, I'd appreciate directions.
Also, I'm sure I'll have more questions regarding everything about the phone...
To give you an idea of my understanding of Cell Phones; my last phone was this:
http://gizmodo.com/images/2006/06/pantec_c300_1.jpg

This Expo is a really big jump for me.

And last question really, is there a ''Starter Guide" somewhere?

Thank you for your time and/or any time you have to offer. Smiley

Oh... And here is info that I do know that may be of use -

I use ATT
I have a Mircro SD Card in the slot (1GB)
I have connected my phone to my computer, only to charge it though. (Currently running Vista, not sure if this matters) I have not done anything but charge phone.

Thanks again!

Hi zopel, Welcome to the Expo/IQ forums Wink

Nice introduction to explain where your at with things too.

I am not the one to talk to about net settings, theres a few things to do, hopefully one of the smart guys can pitch in on it, other wise, I can point you to threads to give you some idea about it.

Can't Connect Thread
Enable Media Net settings

Theres a ton of things that can be done to the phone as well, we have a "Tweaker" program in my signature, hand rolled by one, a collection of tweaks.

As well theres custom roms, to get a little more modern an unrestricted.

Hope this points you in right direction an helps, and enjoy the forums too.

WR
Thank you very much. Smiley

I will look into these and see if they help.

Edit:
I did this:
check your proxy setting, it should be disabled. enable it only when you want to use ATT'S WEBSITE
The Proxy Mgr is located in the Tools Menu

It seems to have helped with the ''can not connect'' message.

I also downloaded Dark's Cab for MediaNet onto my computer... Now... It is sitting on my desktop, what do I do with it?

Thanks for any help! (again)

I'd also like to welcome you to the forum.

If any of you know where I can go to get answers, I'd appreciate directions.

You're here. We have quite a few really smart people and as WarRaven said someone here can point you in the right direction.

I also downloaded Dark's Cab for MediaNet onto my computer... Now... It is sitting on my desktop, what do I do with it?

You must get the cab to your eXpo and run it from there. You can move it via Active Sync/WMDC over USB, you can use a card reader to move it directly to your storage card, or if you have bluetooth on your desktop, you can send it to your eXpo that way. Once you get it to your eXpo, use file explorere to navigate to where you stored it. Click it and it will install. Hope this helps.

Lots to help you with your new obsession, er, I mean eXpo, have a look around and have some fun.

Thanks, I'll try that now. But I just noticed, I still get the ''cannot connect'' message.

It says the following:
Cannot connect for an unknown reason.
To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap setting.
If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufactures documentation and try again.

And then it gives me an option to go to settings, and if I click that it takes  me to:
Quote
Connections
Media Net
This connection is pre-configured. It cannot be modified.

My Work Network
Add new modem connection
Add new VPN server connection
Set up my proxy server
There is a tab that says Advanced and that leads me to

Quote
"Select which networks are automatically used.
=select networks (button)=
=dialing rules (button)=

Create exceptions for intranet addresses.
=exceptions...(button)=
I disabled the Proxy settings in my Proxy mngr in tools like the post above said. Is there something I missed?

Also, I have just installed the CAB for Media Net... With this, will I be able to go on MSN/AIM now? And do I do so by clicking the ''Instant Messaging" icon, or through something else?
I just tried to sign on through the Instant Messaging icon and it said 'request could not be completed (code: 87)'

Sorry, I have strep throat and am a little out of it today. I am apparently going to ramble. I was re-reading this thread to see if I missed something, I think I did. Since it's easier to help if we know where you are, let's start with some questions.

Are you with AT&T? Since you wrote you have an eXpo and went to the ATT site, I assumed you are. (But we all know what happens when you assume). If so, you do not need to edit the Media Net settings, they are already correct for AT&T.

Do you have a data plan? AT&T requires a data plan for smartphones. You asked about being charged for internet access. While you will not be charged to access the internet over Wi-Fi, if you have a data plan you are already paying for internet access over cellular.

Do you have a texting plan? The stock IM client uses data but is charged as SMS messaging. If you do not have a texting plan, it can get expensive.

No problem, it happens.

Yes. I am with ATT.

I do not have a data plan as far as I know.

Long story short-- ATT Royally messed up, sent me ''any'' phone I wanted, I picked this because it looked neat. And I didn't want an iPhone. So I did not get it through their 'Store'. A Supervisor over the phone OKed my request for the phone because of their mess up; they sent me the phone without any change to my account (data or otherwise) as far as I can tell. (I have checked my account info)

I do have a Txt plan. It is 200msg a month as of now.

Welcome to the forum zopel, glad to have you. Nice job picking the eXpo as the free phone to make things up to you!

One note of caution: Keep a sharp eye on your AT&T account online.

The AT&T automated system is designed to detect the type of phone you have when it registers on the network via IMEI number - i.e. the first time you use the data network. If/when it sees a "smartphone" such as the eXpo the AT&T computer system will automatically add a 2GB data package to your account for $25/month "as a convenience to you, to allow you to get the most out of your smartphone" (that is the text message you will receive). All this happens automatically, without any human involvement whatsoever.

And fighting with AT&T to remove a data service and remove the charges after the fact is bothersome to say the least. They will not want to believe that you will only use wi-fi, and try to fight back with the "mandatory" data plan for smartphones company policy.

I would strongly advise searching through the forum here for ways to disable cellular data completely to ensure you don't accidentally use it.

Just a friendly heads-up,

RC

The site has detected my Expo, it is listed as ''My Device''. There are ''new'' options regard smartphone data plans, non of which are selected. The only things that I have at this time are--

Insurance.
Messaging 200.
World Connect. (Long distance; I asked for this awhile ago)

And that is it aside from standard voice mail and junk which has 0.00 pricing.

Thanks for the heads up though. Again, as of now, nothing has been changed to my account...

I hate to double post but I found that the message continues to pop up regardless of my efforts to change my Media Net settings or My Proxy settings... I have no idea how to stop this. Also, I still can not sign onto AIM/MSN.

If all you needed was an IM client to work over Wi-Fi, I would suggest Palringo. Works on Wi-Fi with the phone radio turned off. Opera Mobile 10 and Skyfire can get you internet access over Wi-Fi.

What I am about to suggest may get you a data plan along with it's added charge (and most likely a headache). You could call AT&T tech support.  Shocked

Man, they should fire me for that!  Grin

Do you need acess to IM & internet everywhere? Do you have acess to Wi-Fi often enough to get your connectivity fix? I need access everywhere and am willing to pay for it. I have unlimited texts & data and would not put up with not being able to connect through Media Net. At this point, maybe you should try a hard reset, if that doesn't work, you may need to get AT&T involved. Let us know if you need more help.

How do I do a hard reset?

Start>Settings>System>Clear Storage. Select Delete Internal Memory and press Clear. You will lose all customizations and data stored in the eXpo's memory. Your eXpo will be reset to factory. You can backup your documents and contacts beforehand. I would not recommend a full backup because you are trying to fix a problem. I would recommend using Microsoft My Phone to back up what is important. You can find My Phone in the Market Place.
