Was out and about last night, and needed to grab some cash for a purchase.
Stopped by my bank branch and went to machine, slipped my card in and stopped, felt something not quite right just prior to entering my pin number. So I look at slot where I just slid my card though, and I grab the edge of the slot and it popped off into my hand. It was a card skimmer indeed.

Held it up for others in line to see an people started freaking out big time, can't blame them, its about money.
After calling cops an the bank line, I look closer an slam my hand on the Pin pad hood cover, and it had a false  roof inside an it fell into my hands as well lol.

Being a bit of a geek, I listed One, nokia cell phone camera, two nokia cell phone batteries and and the needed board with a CF storage card slot, and wireless transmitter with a interesting antennae aray on it.

The skimmer, was about 10mm think an was pressed on over the slot where you slide your card into the machine, it was flashing the same green as the other terminals and after close examination I realized that this cover only took up a mm or two of room and when placed back over the slot, was very hard to see that it was not normal. it was made to pass the atm slots light right through itself.

Three weeks prior, I caught a car load of guys in lot with a laptop doing what looked like Warchalking, though when they seen me looking they slammed the laptop shut an fled, I reported the incident and plate number as it was malicious in my guess about the situation, now it makes perfect sense.

In hindsight, I should have put it back on an took a couple days off to watch for the guys to come get the skimmer and then called cops, as the skimmer had its own memory and coin cell power supply, but needed to be plugged in to recover data.

So, I am off to the bank this morning, as my face is all over atm machines security and just to let my bank manager know what went down on her machines in her branch.

Moral, Every single time I put my card into a slot, or swipe at a atm or remote location, I will try an remove the machine covers and pieces till I am satisfied its original.

I grabbed a couple pictures of the items.

Take a look.

Edit: To clarify pics,
First one with skimmer sitting on pin pan hood with camera still hidden underneath.
Second picture, both pieces removed and on hood of my truck for pictures.

Nice find WR!

I hate a-holes like this. I've had my card replaced 7 times since Dec. 25th. I'm at the point where I don't bother using it anymore (great way to save cash...lol). Mine never happen at the bank machines but in gas stations when not paying at the pumps and going to the attendant (after looking at your pics, not sure thats now safe either). There's a local Sub shop that I no longer use as on 4 accounts that was the last time I used the card. You figure by now they'd revoke their debit machines but Nooooo! I think everyone at my local branch now knows me on a first name basis as every time I'm in there it's to replace a card Smiley

Getting tired of jerks like these, why don't they get real jobs like the rest of us... #$#@$@!!!!

Interesting that it was actually in your bank branch. Looks like the big green TD chair in the ad?

The people that I know that have been hit by schemes like this has always been either ghetto atms, shady staff or pay at the pump machines at gas stations.

Personally I had my CC # lifted by a douchebag clerk at a hotel I stayed at a few years ago. The bastard used it to surf gay porn! Thankfully my CC company realized that was not something I appeared to be into and called me up.

I typically only use bank machines that are (1) name brand - my bank or another reputable one and (2) in reasonably "secure" (not secluded, but not crazy busy either) areas.

Some banks around here have what amounts to a little booth with a single atm inside, not even accessible from in the bank's main entrance. Call me paranoid, but I avoid them. :| Someone wanting to setup a skimmer would have all the time and privacy they need.

Personally I like cibc's atms, they've got this crazy translucent green piece that sticks out a couple of inches to accept the card and is real easy to check for "extra" pieces. Smiley

Green machines have that translucent piece as well, you just dont see that in back side of that picture well.
Its identical if I am not mistaken.

Thats why I was shocked, once it was on the slot, it added maybe 2-3mm to it,they curved the outside to hide the shape, and was identical.

Edit: It also, the camera portion, had a cut out to accomadate the anti-tamper pin pan hood relief, its hard to see, but the cut out runs under the nokia batteries, and when you look at a normal pin pan hood, it has a casting that protrudes downward from the top to make it hard to stick something to it. Obviously it was not enough counter measure.

This happened to my brother-in-law. He used his card at a gas pump and months later he finds out that someone had gotten all his info by simply using his card at the gas pump. That person opened 5 mobile phone accounts in his name and didn't pay them. He's been disputing them since.

Wow. Kind of a wake-up call that this stuff actually happens and I should be more cautious about where I use my cards. There is TD bank right by my house too, wonder if it's the same one?

That single incident has now changed my outlook about carrying cash on myself.
$40-$60 cash, screw the debit system, its been tainted now to me. Tongue

As for the location of where this happened to me, this was in Edmonton Alberta, TD Canada Trust on the corner of Whyte Avenue(82) and 83rd st.

I've never been to that one in particular, usually only the Scotiabank or the CIBC. If I'm on Whyte ave I'll usually just take out money from the machines inside the bar. But now I'm thinking I should just carry a bit of cash on me instead like you suggested to try to minimize my ATM use  Undecided

vow, great post. I need to be extra cautious when using ATMs in the future. But the way you described it, it doesn't seem obvious to the untrained eye.

Slid back into branch late yesterday to grab a couple bucks for weekend, and realized I still had to slide my card through a debit pin pad at the bank tellers window lol.

(I want retina scanners or finger print scanners in conjunction with my card) lol.
TD Rep told me, they cover all loses through Debit and or EasyWeb to their branches %100.

Talked to Police security again, and it basically comes down to this,

If the pin pad is solid mounted, IE on the new cash registers where its on the side of the screen and Gas pump machines etc, is the least troublesome.

In many cases, cops said, 2 guys go into gas stations, restaurants, bars, corner stores etc where they have debit pads by the till,  one guy distracts store teller, and other switches the pin pads out. A couple weeks pass and they do the same procedure to reacquire their pin pad and replace it with another.

The original pad does not store data, the type thieves are replacing it outright with do, and when they come back 2-3 weeks later, they have the card data and actual pin code for each transaction that took place, including credit cards.
A way to ID a pin pad that has been previously compromised, is if its cabled to the counter now. Usually this means it was and then replaced with a new secure one and bolted or cabled down to prevent it again.
(The transmission is encrypted, however data entry is not beyond, whats shown on the display, its recorded internally on a thieves variant of it)

If its solid mounted and theres a hijacking of your information it can be directly linked back to the servicemen that last worked on the item, as they have been built in and have security screws in place. Example till mounted card readers or Gas pump mounted readers. Though like Dark Said, it was lost through a gas pump, and by my guess, it had a card scanner and camera overhead somewhere or, he used the pin pad inside the store itself after delivery and as well was a camera there somewhere.

Ugh, theres money at stake, so the lengths to get it are never too much.

I've gotten into the habit of using my credit card at the pumps now just because gas stations seem to be the easiest target for skimmers, and usually they make you entire a zip code instead of entering a pin number with a debit card. Take a look at this yahoo article it suggests some ways to avoid this kind of thing. http://finance.yahoo.com/banking-budgeting/article/108583/debit-card-skimming-scams?mod=bb-checking_savings
