Just curious what line of work people on here are in. Do we have a variety, or are all of us nerds? I work in Cognos as a technical analyst and have a long history of support work, how about the rest of you?

OK...I'm a strange one.  I'm a geek... or not...
The not: For the last few years, I have been an Anglican (Episcopal for you south of the border) minister.

The geekyness: I am also the chairman of our IT committee, and oversee our diocese'  IT acquisitions, deployment and web strategies.  I am also a registered P.Eng. and worked for about 15 yrs in Aluminum Reduction, in Canada, the US and Scandinavia.   My first job was to write a control and monitoring program (in HP Basic!!!) for a plant scale test.

Well...I'm 28 years old and I've been working with computers since I was 11. At 17 I was training my teachers how to use their computers and fixing problems on my principle's computer. I went into the military as a broadcast engineer right out of high school. I worked on computers, tv, and radio equipment for the army for about 8.5 years. The last year of it was spent on a deployment in Iraq where I also acted as the webmaster for AFN Iraq's website. I have an associates degree in computer networking and I'm working on a bachelors degree in video game and simulation programming. I did some hardware repair for gamestop for a while, moved on to a field service tech job that I did for a year or so before coming to the job I have now. I had a few little jobs here and there throughout the years and every time I ended up being the one fixing computer issues along with what I was actually there for lol. I do IT Support for an airline parts sales/distribution company. It's pretty nice especially considering they paid for me to get my A+ and MCDST certifications.

I went to school and got a degree in Computer Information and Telecommunication Systems, but things don't always go as planned so, I'm currently working as a GM in the food service industry. I've been working with computers though since I was 6. Even managed to get around some of the security on the computers at school. Everyone I know comes to me with their computer problems. I've been able to solve problems that techs couldn't even figure out. When I have time I fix computers on the side and have built a few systems from scratch as well. Sometimes I go off on a tangent about parts and software and confuse the heck out of friends and family. I would have to say I'm definitely a nerd.

I know what you mean about everyone coming to you for their computer issues. I was at a party the other night and two people my brother works with were asking me about issues they were having. I normally tell them that I can help, but I'm not cheap. Most of the time they think I'm joking, but then realize I'm actually serious lol. I actually taught one of my computer classes since the teacher was too incompetent to do it herself. I got free grades and free reign to do what ever I wanted to in exchange for helping everyone else with their work so she wouldn't lose her job for being incompetent. I would've started on computers sooner than 11 if it was possible, but my first "system" was a commadore 64 when I was 8. At 11 I was spending all day in the library on the computers. Got called out of class a few times because I had set passwords on the screensavers lol.

Now that I find funny. They are suppose to be teaching you and you end up teaching them.

Just as I had suspected! We are all nerds in some way. Not that it's a very shocking revelation. At least we'll all be able to help contribute to making the forum awesome!

I never had trouble with people asking me to fix their computers though, perhaps because most of my friends are also nerds. Smiley

One question though, are any of us girls (other than myself)? It's hard to tell on here. You don't see many ladies in IT. Do I have all you lads to myself or are any of my sister-nerds representin'?

I'm really suprised non of the ladies responded to Tigertosser's call out..

The phone, is well balanced between masculinity an femininity in design, imo anyways.
(In a proffesional kind of way)

I guess, it's just too powerfull for most lady folk to handle, idk....

Just Kiddin' ladies

Tiger, I suspect your not alone here, thinking the others just are shy, till provoked anyways...we may see.
