Stimulus package
A tourist stops at the hotel, leaves a $100 bill at reception, goes upstairs to inspect the rooms.
As soon as he’s upstairs, the hotel owner grabs the bill, runs down the street and pays his debt to the butcher.
The butcher pays his bill to the pig farmer, the pig farmer pays his debt at the Co-op, the Co-op manager to the prostitute.
The hooker rushes to the hotel to pay her outstanding room bill.
The hotel owner puts the $100 back on the counter.
The tourist reappears, doesn’t like the rooms, picks up the $100 and leaves.
No one produced anything. No one earned anything.
But the whole town is out of debt and is more optimistic about the future.
This is how a “stimulus package” works.
