trymr0704. What software are using. Software you might need is a DVD ripper and converter all in one. If you have one. When you rip a DVD was it Widescreen or Fullscreen. Doing so just replicates what you see on the screen. Most or all DVD let you choose one of two optios of course. Thats why you are getting the letterbox format. There nothing to be done about that. I may be wrong. That why I need the info on the software.

From what I am looking at this and being it is a trial version. Do not convert any media to avi. windows mobile does not playback. That might be your problem if not let me know. If ripping from DVD(ogg vorbis) for using on windows mobile and most likely being wide screen you won't be able to remove the the black bars unless you can zoom in more when you do it on a dvd player remote.
OK
To convert it to wmv by clicking wmv.
Click edit profile tab.
Profile should be standard window media video 9.
Frame size scroll down to customs then set size to 800 for width and 480 for height. Audio will stay the same Save profile at the top. Click ok and ok again. Now in advanced tab. Video aspect slide the crop scale over to 100. Leave resize filter alone. Now convert. Let me know if that did not work I'll try something else. Maybe 3gp format.

This is probably what is causing your issue. I've played avi files on my eXpo through media player though. When I rip movies, I use dvd decrypter and rip the widescreen stream from the DVD and then use Pocket Divx to convert it for play on the phone. Works great.

His problem is the black bars that he wants to remove not the playback itself.

If there are black bars on only the top and bottom ie. not the sides you wont be able to remove them without distorting the video-  Aspect ratio of movies are typically narrower than 16:9 unless converted but doing so will cause either distortion or loss of some of the content.
