On the topic of plans.....
I was forced to upgrade to the $30 (pda) plan when I purchased a new smartphone through AT&T.  My understanding is that it may be possible for AT&T to detect (or suspect) "tethering" based on usege.  My statement clearly shows the 30+ minutes of streaming internet radio that I do every morning....  (WunderRadio through Motorola S-9 HD Stereo BT headset)

Yes,  they could detect tethering by usage if, for example, you rack up over a gig of data usage in a 24 hour period, they get suspicious, check the IP addresses connected to and discover you were on a World of Warcraft server all night.  If you read the terms of the unlimited data plans (and I have the same one as you) there is a 5 GB cap on it per month as well before they have a right to charge ''excessive usage'' fees too.

The point here is A: don't go nuts with your data usage - ''unlimited'' is just a euphamism.  B: Spread it throughout the month. Don't try to do everything in one night. And C: Don't do things while tethering that you couldn't conceivable do on your phone.

I myself have been averaging between 1 and 2.5 GB of usage a month for over a year now that way and have never been asked a single question about it or charged any extra.

RogueCheddar is absolutely correct. If it starts to look suspicoius AT&T will start asking questions. I've never had a problem since I don't use tethering much, but I know others that were stupid enough to get caught and they were charged with the excessive usage fees. When I do tether I don't download big files or play games. I usually end up tethering when I don't have a connection available and need to browse something on the net.

Doesn't AT&T charge you extra for doing this?

I dont understand why people think AT&T charges for tethering. I bet most of you all are paying the $30 for web also, or not using 3G and using wifi.  As long as you dobt tell AT&T you are doing it they dont no, (and don't volunteer  information to them) I only pay $10 for unlimited medianet, and i get the full web and at 3G speed.  I have had this for over 2 years and they havent noticed (I have the LG Incite) and before that i used my sony phone to tethered to my laptop.   And i use utorrent to download movies while im on the road.
You're not entirely correct about this. Their tethering plan has a 5gb cap on it. It would stand to reason that if you are on a standard MEdiaNet plan and hit that mark, they are going to know for a fact that you are tethering because a phone that should be on that plan should not be capable of pulling that kind of data through a WAP browser. The same goes for a smartphone. If you go over the tethering cap they are surely going to notice. The most I do while tethering is download a torrent of an anime or two (less than 175mb each), and some light web browsing.

NOt sure if this is the right area to post. I previously had a LG Xenon. I had it paired to my laptop and netbook with a bluetooth dongle. I was able to use the dial up networking feature to connect to the internet through my cell phone using blue tooth. This worked great in situations where I couldn't use "free interenet service" like at a hotel that only had paid internet.
I paired my new LG Expo and tried to  use the same bluetooth interenet connection throught dial up networking. I get a 777 error code. I then tried to go into START/TOOLS/INTERENT Sharing on my Expo, chose bluetooth PAN and still says "Unable to establish data connection" It seems like it is going to connect but it doesn't.
The original dial up networking setup was very simple. After Pairing I go to connect and place *99# as the number to dial. It would connect to my Xenon with no issues.
What am I doing wrong and what do I have to have set on my eXpo for it to work besides having the bluetooth on and paired?Huh What do I need to change on my Laptop (running WIN XP Pro) This again is to be able to get on the internet through the bluetooth using the cell phone.

my expo use to say unable to acquire data connection but i changed the forcedata reg key to media net and now it connects but my laptop will not load web paged.

also WMwifirouter does not show a 3g to bluetooth option on my expo.

i found a bluetooth test app in the windows directory that has a broadcom background also a bluetooth spy app that i am not sure what it does.

Has anyone run any speed tests while tethering? I'm curious to see if the eXpo is faster than older 3G devices.

After running Woodhole's Tweaker, was able to use Internet Sharing via USB no problem at all, but cannot get bluetooth PAN (which is my preferred connection method - phone can be charging) to set up with my Vista laptop no way, no how.  Anyone have any luck with this? Does the older ICS cab Dark posted above revert it back to the older configuration, like 6.1?

use this Wink
I tried this cab and i still can't connect with either attcm or dial-up.  Sad

Did you actually pay for the AT&T tethering? Why would you use the AT&T Connection Manager  - it'll just try to connect to their ISP, instead of MEdiaNet, and that won't work without the tethering option on your account - or create a dialup? Use ICS.exe and USB or bluetooth to connect to MEdiaNet.

of course.  been having it for over a year now. as i stated before, I was using it with my samsung blackjack all day long.  I dont use the attcm anymore since its very problematic and even the att guys told me not to use it.  I still cant get the bluetooth to connect but i get the USB cable to connect. which is better than nothing which I had before.  Thanks again for all y'alls help.

Running Dragonstorm 23568 and tethering via bluetooth at 1.5mbps. Apparently my speeds are still restricted by the network and not the device.  Sad

Edit: My Speedtest.net numbers are similar to my Incite but my internet connection while tethering here at work seems like twice as fast. Rock solid 3G with the eXpo whereas my Incite would bounce between 3G and EDGE.

(fracking keyboard not giving me my "m"s.)

My speeds are pretty much the same over BT.

Hey guys i was wondering if you could help me. Since i did this tweak my internet doesnt seem to want to work on my phone. I didnt touch anything else in the registry except the strin mentioned and my phone connects to Media Net but sky fire and internet explorer will not load any pages. Does anyone have any idea why this is?

Thanks

EDIT: I figured it out. I still had my data cable plugged in to charge my phone while i was messing around. Active Sync would not allow Media Net to access the internet while the data cable is plugged in.
