Is there ANY way to remove all the preinstalled crap that comes loaded on the eXpo? I tried to delete the java apps installed, but they are protected files. I can't even delete them using my file browser across active sync. I want to get rid of all this crap I'm not going to use. They are all trials and when the trial is over you're stuck with useless programs taking up space.

Bloatware.
These come up as cab files. I tried this one trick it did not work. Maybe I did not time it right. It is the same method on the htc tilt where you hard reset the phone then after you do your screen calibration, set the time zone, etc. then the phone goes into a config screen then that where you soft reset or take out the battery, but Lg has program so you can not it just does not do that. That where we need a new base rom.

I am not convinced this works, though it appears to.

DO you know that demo movie that plays when you first start up or after a hard reset, well its 17mb in size.

On the Canadian IQ version, we have a second copy in french... so 35mb between them.
That really annoys me to no end, so i tried alot of things, though the one that seemed to make them disappear was this..

Make a note pad file, Enter a word or something in it, close it, name it in our case for the IQ, TELUS.wmv and TELUS_FR.wmv,(Maybe At&t.wmv for expo) then use total commander to copy them files back into windows, it will not ask you to overwrite them or warn you, now if you look for them they should be both under a mb each.

Now for the AT&T version, i don't know how they'd name it exactly, and this process should work for any file in the windows directory.

Try it, tell me if it works for you, did it give you your storage space back?

you can't delete anything from the ROM, i.e. most of the stuff under \windows. that's the definition of ROM: read-only. until the developer/enthusiast community come up with custom roms or get the rom of unbranded phones (i.e. no carrier customizations), every time you do a hard reset the crap will come back, but you can still delete them from the ram to free up space.

the expo:
under \program files, delete everything except "widgets", "windows media player" and "connections".

then goto \windows\start menu\programs and remove the shortcuts that no longer work.

I'm not sure if there's a tutorial video for At&t. at least it doesn't start up after hard reset.
there's a tutorial video for LG S-class UI (LGTutorial.exe), but it's in the ROM.

Yes, it comes from the ROM, where you cant even see it or anything that resides there within.
Though, when the the ROM is iniatalized, the ROM stuff is copied into RAM.
With that in mind, anything in the windows folders, occupies, RAM, and is set to, System, and usually hidden, in their properties.

So that movie, and its named LGTutorial on the expo, is taking up, storage space in RAM.

Old Ipaq's, used to have a partition where you could write to ROM, Was a interesting set up, when it went bad, only way to write to it, was to write over what was in it to use it, with 0mb files.

It does not remove the movie from ROM, it removes its size in RAM.

You can corrupt a DLL, if it was the ROM's version, then HR's wouldn't work, it comes from ROM, then resides in RAM.

The other offenders of size are the start up an shut down animations, huge files.

Rom files can not be deleted/overwritten/anything. We are stuck with there crap its that simple. It goes to how the rom are made and the drivers associated..

the best thing we can do is 1/2 overwrite them using a cab or a program like total commander to 1/2 overwrite. What this does is the same thing as the cab...it simple moves the file to the side then writes the new file. BUT if u uninstall the cab or delete the new file the old file will magically come back.

This is still very useful with say assigning another program to the longpress-power. Just simple replace the shutdown.exe with the desired program(may also have to replace the shutdown.lnk idk i just did both).

I think I may have found a solution to our woes. You know how you can't remove a system file in windows from within windows because it's set with a "system" file attribute right...well in windows you can remove the s attribute using the command prompt. I just installed PocketConsole and PocketCmd and I'm going to try it out. I'll post results once I do.

I'm hoping it's just a compatibility issue, but every time I try to even VIEW the attributes of a file, device.exe and PocketCMD.exe crash. I'm going to look into it more and see what I can find. For those interested I'll attach both pocket console and pocket cmd. They seem to run fine other than the attrib issue.

UPDATE:
I almost forgot, you have to use active sync for the installs. I noticed that when active sync transfers them to the phone, they run from \windows\AppMgr\Install but when you go to that folder there's nothing there. I was going to try copying the cab files out of there, but it looks like it won't work that way.

UPDATE:
Ok so I found the .cab files and replaced the attachments. Just an FYI to anyone that was curious, when you install a file from an exe to your phone through activesync, it places the cab in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync folder inside it's own folder.

Thanks for all you guys do, I love reading this forum.
I am getting this Lg eXpo this week and currently have the Samsung Omnia i900.
To remove some of the bloatware, can one just use regedit? Or am I missing something here?
Thanks

Hi Platnm6309,

Have you looked in our ROM forums?

Can't remove stuff from the Expo as I thought up above, though you can now replace the ROM and have a lot more storage space..
