I have used this GPS app for several years, first on my Touch Pro, now on my Telus IQ.

It works very well, and does not have the lag it had on the TP.  Unfortunately not cheap.

I did have to play with it a bit, before it would work though.

I installed the app, and ran it, and it could not find a GPS.  I then went to the Windows GPS settings, and changed the settings from managed by windows, to COM4.  Restarted Garmin, and sill no joy.  Then went back into the windows GPS settings, set it back to managed by windows, restarted Garmin, waited a minute, and presto...it worked.  Could have been a fluke...maybe I should have waited longer the first time.

Locks quickly, and no data usage which is different from Goggle maps, and no monthly charges the carriers like to charge for their GPS aps.  Even works were you have no phone signal, just need to be able to see the sky.

I use Garmin XT on my Incite and it works beautifully on the eXpo, but like you it took a while for it to get a lock so I don't think it was a fluke.

HOwdy!

I am curious as to how you two installed GarminXT.
On my Expo, the settings on my GPS (settings> system> external GPS) have 3 tabs: Programs, hardware and access.
Programs has the port and in the past, in other devices I had set the port to COM4. Now, the biggest mystery to me is what the hardware tab does, for the port never saves and it sets to (none), and the access tab has the (manage GPS auto) checked.

When I start the GarminXT, it tries to seek for GPS signal but it only searches as if there was suppose to be a Bluetooth GPS attached.

If you would be more than kind enough to share what settings were changed, I would much appreciate it.

Click on the signal bar that is in the upper left hand corner after the program is loaded up. Then click disable in the lower right corner. Now there should be a list of settings on the screen. Choose Use GPS Intermediate Driver. Then click Enable in the lower right hand corner. That should do the trick.

Forgot the cardinal rule... think first... post second!!!

I had the device set to auto shutdown after 1 min of non-use.

That's what caused the phone to switch off.

Garmin works fine now. Excellent program.

How long does it take for you guys to get gps signal?

I have the same settings as you guys (com4, auto manage, integrated driver) but my expo seems to be having a lot of trouble getting signal still.  It may or may not have anything to do with being indoors, but my other smartphone (Xperia X1) I upgraded from had no problems getting signal in here

I noticed at first my Expo had some trouble locking in a satellite while indoors or under trees, etc - places I could get a signal with other phones in before. Once I ran the GpsViewer.exe app in the Windows directory first though, it seemed to "warm up" the GPS - locked in no problem after that until the next time fully shut down the phone and rebooted it (soft reset seemed not to affect it).  So I made a shortcut to that app, and have made a habit of running that first anytime I will be using the GPS. Google Maps locks in my location literally in seconds after that.

I don't seem to have any trouble with getting a satellite lock with mine, even after a cold start.

I've been playing with my Garmin a lot yesterday and today. I have been trying to find the right voice for it and thought I would share how I keep several voices on the eXpo and have them all work correctly. I made subfolders in the voice folder on my sd card for each of the different voices which are all named English_American_.vpm so the words are all correct. When I want to change the voice, I use file explorer to go into the folder for the one I want and copy and paste it into the voice folder. The next time I start Garmin I have a different voice tellin' me where to get off. I currently have 8 voices on my eXpo. If people are interested, I could put them in my mediafire account and post the link. Well when I get back to my wifi.

Edit: I have uploaded a rar containing the 8 voices I currently have:
The Devil
The Governator
Jill
Sedara
Cartman
Pierre Pissant
Borat
Stewie
The file for the rar is here:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/dzyyxnmkyjt/Garmin voices.rar

and in zip:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/z2umzmm2utd/Garmin voices.zip

If anyone wants just a single file, let me know.  Smiley

If you don't mind data usage, either program should get you what you need. I prefer Garmin for the interface & voice directions. You also can use a browser to get that info. Smiley
